Contingent Liability

A liability which arises independently from an insured as a result of negligence on the part of another person or organisation, but for which the insured may be held responsible. An example of contingent liability is that of a principal contractor, who may incur liability as a result of actions undertaken by subcontractors. See also Vicarious Liability.
